MARCH RUNNING

Another month of running has come and gone. I have never run more miles in one calendar month before. Training for a marathon will do that to a person. I ran every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday in March.

The March Running Stats:
Total Miles Run - 156.79 (according to mapmyrun)
Days of Running - 18
Longest Run - 17.3 miles
Times on Treadmill - 1 (Yes, only one!)
Approx. calories burned - 20,102 (thus creating the bottomless pit that is my stomach)

Year to date miles - 349.22 miles

OPENING DAY!

Another day that should be a national holiday each year! There's just something special about the start of a new baseball season. In 2002 I went to the Yankees season opener in Baltimore and there was something glorious about watching baseball after a long, snowy winter.

"You always get a special kick on opening day, no matter how many you go through. You look forward to it like a birthday party when you're a kid. You think something wonderful is going to happen." - Joe DiMaggio

ND - FROZEN FOUR!

Watching Notre Dame hockey has been quite a rollar coaster the past two years.

Last season they spent the better part of the year ranked as the nation's top ranked team as they won the conference regular season and tournament championships. Unfortunately, they bowed out in the NCAA Tournament one game short of the Frozen Four with a loss to Michigan State.

Flash forward to this year were they barely make the NCAA Tournament. They were the last at-large team selected. The Irish entered the NCAA's by winning just four of their final 13 games and had to face top seeded New Hampshire in the first round. So all they do in that game is tie their season high by scoring seven goals in the win in earning a rematch with Michigan State.

After playing MSU twice in the regular season were they posted a loss and a tie they pull off the upset and exact some revenge from last year. They are headed to the Frozen Four for the first time in school history!

Next up? Just a date with the nation's top ranked team and bitter rival - Michigan!

TWO YEARS AGO

There are just some dates on the calendar that bring back memories. Whether they be good or bad there are certain dates that we will always remember for the rest of your life.

March 30 is one of those dates for me. I remember very clearly just about all the events of that day in 2006 from 4:30 p.m. till I went to bed that evening.

I remember leaving tennis practice to go pick Jen for that Coldplay concert at the United Center in Chicago then heading to Portillo’s for a dinner prior to the show.

When we got to the United Center I remember walking up to our seats and then my cell phone rings. The phone call with a California area code that I wanted to answer very badly but couldn’t at that particular moment.

My first instinct was to wait to after the concert to listen to the voicemail but after 30 seconds I stepped outside to listen. I was accepted into the Mosaic internship program and it was the best voicemail I have ever received.

I returned the phone call and in a back hallway of the United Center I was officially offered the internship. The internship I wanted very badly and the rest is history. Needless to say the concert was epic. Ah yes, the memories.

PRAYER & VOLKSWAGEN MAINTANCE

About a month ago now I finished Donald Miller's first book - "Prayer and the Art of Volkswagen Maintenance." It was written in the late 90's and re-released as "Through Painted Desert" in 2003/2004 (sometime around then).

I had a really hard time putting this book down. The book chronicles the road trip that Miller and his friend took from Texas to Oregon. The story of their journey makes the book worth the read let along all the thoughts that Miller has.

There were numerous questions that were raised in my head during the read, here's a sampling of those questions:

“The people I used to be surrounded by are getting along fine without me. Somehow, that really bugs me … What if the feeling of freedom I felt last night turns to boredom? Maybe the thing that I am trying to escape is that which sustains me.” - Miller. Right as they left Texas and started the road trip.

It is not sure much the aim of the devil to lure me with evil but to preoccupy me with meaninglessness.

Why did Jesus come when He did? Why not sooner? Later?

How mysterious am I, really? How great must God be to understand that?

Do I create drama just to “feel” important or good about myself?

What am I doing to pursue Kingdom advancement? Am I doing anything at all?

What is up with “worship” these days? Miller calls it microwavable in a nice little package. It should be something that sweats from our pores everyday.

We (Christians) seem to understand how to “do church” but how much of our energies is devoted to understand and loving God? Is the “institution” more appealing than loving God? It might be just be because it is easier to “do church” than understand a complex God.

How is it that I am trying to look impressive by reading and understanding rather reading and understanding for only God to see? Why do I try to impress those on earth rather than pursue God passionately? Do I need the knowledge only without the relationship with God? Seems to be the wrong pursuit.

How simple have I made my life so that possessions aren’t as important as knowing God? Stuff is just stuff after all and it goes away.

Has the current church (i.e. the institution) become over reliant on cooperate America? We rely on billboards, radio, TV, etc. rather than good old fashion word of mouth discipleship.

What are all of my accomplishments worth … really?

How does it look when I try to dance with God? Sloppy, toes hurting, close or distant, grateful, painful …

Two joys – ignorance based and truth based?

What is it I find identity in between what do I encompass myself within?

Ever look at the stars and wonder which star is yours? God did tell Abraham his descendants would number the stars.

What extra weight am I carrying? Like carrying a refrigerator on a camping trip through the trails.

Is everything “out there” really a Christian analogy?

What is the cereal in my life that I should be desiring? You know the basic needs of life. Not cars, money, worth but just the simple/basic things that truly sustain life.

Is Sunday church like a coaches pep talk before the game? I have the plan and energy but I don’t execute it. You know?

What has the biggest influence on my thoughts and emotions? Do I give the “right” answers just because it is the proper thing to do? You know just going through the motions type stuff.

When I have a burst of energy and the adrenaline is really flowing b/c of something and good and positive what is my first action/instinct? Pray, do nothing, tell another person?

Though good and bad am I really noticing how God’s fingerprints are all around in and what’s happening in my life? What, if anything, would I do differently if I paid more attention to those fingerprints?

How do you reflect on the past and really look to see how and why God created and shaped those moments?

Ever think of stars as holes in the sky and those holes shine God’s brilliance?

Do Christians want to feel special just because they are Christians? And that “special” nature killing (or hurting) God’s advancement?

How many days do I wake-up trying to see and hear God better?

Do I try to be “Godly” for the recognition and to feel better about myself?

Am I seeking relationship or serving law?

Is my religion more important than “the” relationship? When did a “formula” become more important? Easy answers are what God intends. That’s poppy cock religion/formula.

If you truly search for God, you will find Him just through the process of elimination. It is, after all, what Solomon did in Eccl. Because God will remove all distractions.

Why is it you pursue the girl who wants little or nothing to do with you?

God is always reaching out for us. What is distracting us from reaching back?

What’s more of a miracle – healing the blind or the sunrise? Maybe both are miracles because God is all around.

The day that marriages changed all over the country ...

The Food and Drug Administration approves Viagra for use as a treatment for male impotence, the first pill to be approved for this condition in the United States.

(And just for the record, this is in no way a slam for individuals who use Viagra. Unless you are Rafael Palmeiro - a user of more drugs that just Viagra)

DATING TECH SUPPORT

Something a little fun from my pal Marty ...

Dear Tech Support,

Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a distinct slow down in overall system performance -- particularly in the flower and jewelry applications, which perated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0.In addition, Husband 10 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5 and then installed undesirable programs such as NFL 5.0, NBA 3.0, and Golf Clubs 4.1.(and NASCAR 500.0) Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and Housecleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system. I've tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail. What can I do?

Signed,
Desperate

********************************

Dear Desperate:

First keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an Entertainment Package, while Husband 1.0 is an Operating System. Please enter the command: 'I Thought You Loved Me.exe' and try to download Tears 6.2 and don't forget to install the Guilt 3.0 update. If that application works as designed, Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the applications Jewelry 2.0 and Flowers 3.5. But remember, overuse of the above application can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Grumpy Silence 2.5, Happy Hour 7.0 or Beer 6.1. Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that will download the Snoring Loudly Beta.

Whatever you do, DO NOT install Mother-in-law 1.0 (it runs a virus in the background that will eventually seize control of all your system resources). Also, do not attempt to reinstall the Boyfriend 5.0 program. These are unsupported applications and will crash Husband 1.0. In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance. We recommend Food 3.0 and Hot Lingerie 7.7.

Good Luck,
Tech Support

LEBRON & VOGUE

Ok, look at the cover of the current Vogue magazine ... does this thought come to my -- " [the cover] conjures up this idea of a dangerous black man." OR it "screams King Kong."

I might be a little bit crazy to think this but who in the world came up with this idea? Just another example of people taking a little simple something and making it a much bigger deal than it needs to be.

WASH. ST. 61, NOTRE DAME 41

So Notre Dame just got beat. Plain and simple. Every now and then you have to tip your hat to your opponent who just played better than you did. That's exactly what happened on Saturday night in Denver, CO as the Cougars put a hurting on Notre Dame.

To all those nay-sayers out there who want to blame head coach Mike Brey for the lose -- stop. You are wasting your time. It wasn't coach Brey's fault they lost. They guy is one very good coach who gets a lot out of his players. He deserved his Big Easy Coach of the Year award the past two years.

Notre Dame lost for one major reason, Washington State played great defense. They impossed their will on the Irish from the outset and Notre Dame couldn't recover. These things happen. It is unfortunate for it to happen against a team I enjoy rooting for but it is what it is.

It was a fun year to root for a team that was picked to finished ninth in the preseason Big East poll and make a run into the second round of the NCAA Tournament. It's not so much the loss that's bothersome, it is just the fact that you can't watch a team you enjoy rooting for a several months. But, until next season ...

CHANGING THE WORLD

A recent edition of Time Magazine recently gave us 10 Ideas that are changing the world. An absolutely fascinating read.

1. Common Wealth
2. End of Customer Service
3. The post-movie-star era
4. Reverse Radicalism
5. Kitchen Chemistry
6. Geoengineering
7. Synthetic Authenticity
8. The New Austerity
9. Mandatory Health
10. Re-Judaizing Jesus

In some strange and odd manner they all made a lot of sense. Some were there for "pure entertainment" but others really made you think about your role in this world with 6+ billion people. The idea of Common Wealth really got me thinking. Brilliant philanthropist Jeffrey Sachs wrote the article for this idea and there was one particular quote that stuck out:

"Each of us has a role to play and a chance for leadership ... If the public leads, politicians will surely follow."

While I sometimes think the characteristic of leadership is sometimes overblown and paid way to much attention to, there is certainly a lot of truth to the quote. We all have influence, right? Sure we do.

The question really is - where are you influencing and are you doing it well? Are you influencing only within your "comfort zone" or are you stepping up and really doing some solid influencing? You know, are you really ruffling some feathers and making people really making people re-think things?

CHICAGO ADVENTURE

I took a mid-week trip to Chicago late Wednesday afternoon to visit my cousin who was in the area for a conference. A simple little trip to the windy city proved to be quite interesting ...

- First, I was driving on I-80 westbound just three miles from the exit where my cousin was staying and BOOM! My passenger side rear tire blows out. Let me tell you that replacing a flat tire along side a major interstate is not fun. In fact it is quite nerve-racking. Luckily, I had a full size spare and not just a doughnut spare. Some how it only took 20 minutes to make the change.

- Me and the cousin make our way onto Michigan Ave. to walk the magnificent mile for a bit. Not two minutes after we arrive I run into Robert Horry of the San Antonio Spurs! We exchange quick pleasantries for 30 seconds and I'm on my way. That was kind of cool to speak with a seven-time NBA champion for a quick moment.

- The police presence along Michigan Ave. was unreal! There were at least 125 cops on the sidewalks of the five or six blocks we walked. I've never felt so safe in my life. I come to find out the increase police numbers were do to a war protest planned for later that evening.

- You know, I never knew there was such a cool display of Lego's in the Nordstrom building. Definitely worth the visit to see the cool creations they have.

- A pleasant evening was capped off with none other than Chicago's own deep dish pizza from Giordano's!

CRV LOVE

I really enjoy my Honda CRV. It drives nice. It looks good. It's a Honda so it should last a long time. Well, it better last a time now after I just pumped upwards of $2500 into my four-wheeled vehicle over the last few weeks. Here's just a little smattering of things:

* One cracked cylinder head fixed
* An oil change
* New windshield wiper blades
* Four new tires
* New timing belt
And
* Front wheel alignment (dang pot holes!)

Hopefully this will be the last time I need to pour any significant money into my vehicle for a long, long time.

NCAA TOURNAMENT

The first four days of the NCAA Tournament should be a national holiday. It is, without a doubt, the best multi-day sporting event in the country. So I hope that you have made your picks and they turn out well. However, most importantly, just enjoy the games regardless of your selections!

My Final Four - UNC, Kansas, Texas, UCLA
Championship - UNC over Texas

I had a hard time finding some upset picks but here's what I came up with:

* Arizona makes the Elite 8
* W. Kentucky over Drake in the first round (a 12-seed has beaten an 5 many times!)
* St. Joseph upsets Oklahoma in the first round
* #2 Duke is the first "major" team outed with a second round loss to Arizona

CLEAN LIVING

I have developed an hypothesis in regards to busy-ness and the way your house or apartment appears --

* If you have cloths that are draped on your couch or chairs instead of in your closest or in your dresser drawer, then you are probably too busy.

* If the cap of your toothpaste and/or mouthwash has a tendency to not get screwed back on, then you maybe too busy.

* If you have pairs of shoes in each room of your place and they aren't neatly organized, you might be too busy.

* If you have a poster that you got three months ago still rolled up instead of on your wall, then you maybe too busy.

* If your kitchen table is used for something besides eating like a collecting location for your mail, iPod and other assortments of gadgets, you might be too busy.

Of course, you may just be lazy too.

JESUS THE "G"

So I was helping out at the Center for the Homeless the other night and an ND student was studying for her upcoming test in some religion class. We got into this discussion and she busted out this quote:

"If Jesus were alive today He would be a 'G'. He was radical and really had no tolerance for Pharisee and their religious rules so He would be a 'G'."

My apologies to those who may not understand the "G" concept.

NARCISSISM

Amid the incredible high infidelity rate in American and the recent scandals of former NY Governor Eliot Spitzer and Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick the Today Show did this piece on "Are We Wired to Cheat On Our Mates"

Now I will admit that I was still a little "blurry eyed" when the piece aired but one of the experts - University of Texas psychologist and author David Buss - made this very interesting observation:

"Men who are high on the narcissism personality characteristic are more likely to cheat than men who are lower. They put their own needs and their own urges before those of their families ... We have to be realistic about our human nature. We have these impulses to stray, but we also have inhibitions against straying and the ability to choose whether or not we do.”

This is just another example of the major ethical crisis facing all of humanity -- selfishness. The longer I interact with people and hear their stories, an individuals livelihood essentially boils down to whether they are treating others with a sense of selfishness (i.e. narcissism) or a sense of servant hood.

83 YEARS OF MARRIAGE

Last March my grandparents celebrated their 65th anniversary. Rather impressive don't you think? I can't imagine being alive that long let along be married that long.

Here's a couple that has been married for 83 years! Yes, 83! What were you doing in 1925? That's when this couple got married.

MARCH MADNESS

* How in the world did Butler drop to a 7th seed?
* Indiana as an eight-seed?
* No Virginia Tech or Ohio State?
* Watch out for USC v. K-State (Mayo v. Beasley)
* Can you believe Georgia's run to win the SEC Tournament?
* Watch out for the 5-12 game!
* Rock Chalk Jayhawks - Big 12 Champions! Maybe more?

Let the Fun Begin!! There's nothing better in college athletics than March Madness!

BEST CONCERT SONGS

I was driving around the greater South Bend area on Thursday afternoon listening to Bruce Springsteen Live in New York album. It's probably the best live album in my collection. As I was listening it got me thinking --

What are the best songs that I have heard live?

* Badlands - Springsteen
* Born to Run - Springsteen
* Come Away with Me - Norah Jones
* Humble Me - Norah Jones
* We Are One Tonight - Switchfoot
* Easier Than Love - Switchfoot
* Remember When it Rained - Josh Groban
* You Are Loved (Don't Give Up) - Josh Groban
* Criminal - Fiona Apple
* In My Place - Coldplay
* Clocks - Coldplay
* Hips Don't Lie - The Fray
* Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American) - Toby Keith
* Summer of '69 - Bryan Adams

Those are the ones that really stand out. Waiting to see U2 ...

MOMENT OF TRUTH

Take Jerry Springer and add a little bit of Fox's network hype and what do you come up with? The Moment of Truth.

As I was watching this show (albeit for 15 minutes) on Wednesday night for the first time, I could not believe what I was viewing. I'll admit that when I saw the promos for this show several weeks ago I was fairly intrigued but after taking the time to watch it for an extended I was kind of bothered.

* Has American society sunk "so hungry" for truth that we have to hook people up to lie detectors and offer money?

* Is public humiliation necessary for couples to know everything about one another?

* Why does money grab our attention more than the actually telling of truth?

3 A.M. IRONY

I just find this absolutely hilarious. The ultimate piece of irony for the 2008 Presidential election.

I give this girl credit for getting involved in the political process.

If Hillary Clinton continues to bring up this "3 a.m." garbage, she may (hopefully) find her way out of the race.

MARATHON AT 101

What will you be doing when you hit 101 years old? How about run a marathon - here.

Who know if the guy will end up completing the thing but I applaud his efforts. Have another pint on me Buster!

I AM LEGEND - ALTERNATE ENDING

(Props to Corey for finding the link!)

What in the world where the producers and the powers that be thinking when they used an ending other then this one - here. If you've seen the movie take the next six minutes and watch how it should have ended.

I Am Legend was a really good movie except for the final 10 or so minutes. If it wasn't for the ending there is no doubt in my mind that it would rank up there with one of my favorite action/thrillers ever. Fortunately there are DVD releases that include alternate endings.

The movie ending shown in the theaters wasn't bad but it was extremely anti-climatic. I remember leaving the theater some what let down but at least this newer ending allows me to think of the movie in a little more positive aspect. Seriously this movie went from a seven on a scale of 1-10 to almost a 10 because of the newer ending.

HYPOCRISY

Have you ever pondered this question -

Is everyone just a recovering hypocrite?

Well, maybe not a "recovering" hypocrite because not everyone realize they are one. I am becoming more and more convinced that everyone has a certain level of hypocrisy that they live with. Hopefully they are learning from that.

It just goes to show you how important the concept of grace is. In addition, it also shows the importance of "do unto others as you would have them to unto you" (Lk. 6:31) AND "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you" (Eph. 4:32)

LOST LUGGAGE

Saturday must have been one of those "off" days in my life. After getting bumped/nudged by a mini-van during the morning, I returned to my apartment in the afternoon to find out that I was missing a few things.

I was unpacking my bag from the Florida trip and I realized that I was missing the bag that had my soap, shampoo, tooth bush, toothpaste, hair gel and electric razor. There was a nice little note from the (Transportation Security Administration) saying that my bag was randomly checked for security purposes. I didn't realize those items posed a security risk to the airline and it's passengers.

The only thing that really upsets me about losing that bag of stuff is losing the electric razor. Everything else is easily replaced. However the razor was, after all, a $70 razor. Maybe I should go back to growing out my facial hair on a regular basis? Shaving is kind of overrated anyway. I hear the ZZ Top look might be coming back in style ;-)

HIT AND RUNNING

When I was nine (or was it eight?) I had this unfortunate encounter with a pick-up truck. You see, I had the stop sign but the breaks on my bike decided not to work on the rainy day. Needless to say the truck moving at 35 mph "won" the encounter that summer morning.

Clearly, I survived and until this past Saturday I have never had another incident where person meets vehicle.

I was at my third mile in a 14 mile run when "it" happened. I was running down the sidewalk getting ready to cross the fourway intersection with a red light. I had the little white guy on the light post telling me I was ok to cross the street. However, the minivan decided to do a rolling stop at 5-7 mph and hit my right knee.

Instead of stopping after hitting a human being, the minivan kept nudging forward. I mean are you serious? Do you not see the person directly in front of you that you are hitting? Did you not hear the person pounding his fist onto the hood of your car or screaming "WHAT ARE YOU DOING" so you stop? Would one not stop at this point?

Certainly the drivers slow speed did not hurt me in any manner but rather stun me quite a bit. The driver didn't pull over and stop. Oh no, they just kept right on driving down the road. I finished my run quite well but for a very brief moment I saw my life sliding underneath of the tires of this minivan.

Just for the record, that's two hit by vehicle incidents in my life. And two "wins" for the human body. Maybe a little broken and a little stun but a win none the less.

OH, PARDON ...

My apologies for my lack of activity in the blog world. Since arriving in Orlando I believe I have been more busy in the sunshine state then if I would have stayed in South Bend.

I'll begin posting more once I return. Until then ...
